Happy At You

Anne Peyton to Lisa: "Mommy, I'm happy at you now because you letted me buy those shoes"

Tommy (overheard on the monitor and elsewhere): "Adios Amigos, Heh-wo dodos...Adios Amigos, Heh-wo dodos...Adidas Amigos, Heh-wo dodos"... He sounds just like a parrot. We are pretty sure he got the Spanish from Dora (whom he loves), but not quite sure about the "dodos" greeting!

4th Annual Santa Shot

We had the Hofmeister cousins together again for the 4th Thanksgiving in a row; we had a wonderful celebration at John's parents house in Wisconsin - although brother Eric was terribly missed. We did get to "see" him via the wonders of technology just before he went to bed in hospital compound west of Iraq.

It has become a tradition to get a photo with Santa and the 3 cousins. This year we had NO crying and no fear! Alot of fun. I thought I would post all 4 photos. I think my favorite (no offense to Tommy whose absence is quite excusable!) is the first, where 9-month-old Anne Peyton and Santa are exchanging a special look.

Rest in peace, Jackson Tornow-Motzel-Kardos-Rardin-Hofmeister

…if you were to include his housemates over the years, his name would read "Jackson Tornow-Motzel-Peperak-Kardos-Rardin-Korona-Chapman-Kozicki-Devine-Hylden-Hofmeister"!

Born: 1991
Died: November 25, 2008 at approximately 12pm

Jackson was a hearty fatcat of a fellow who lived a good long life spanning two centuries. He was adopted as a kitten by housemates Kathi Tornow and Rob Motzel in Detroit , Michigan, and then turned over to the care of Rob’s later housemates Dianna Kardos and Lisa Rardin, after Rob married a lovely lady whose allergies wouldn’t tolerate Jack’s beautiful tiger-striped coat.

His claim-to-fame was his weight: nearly twenty pounds! At one house party during those twenty-something years, someone nicknamed him “The Ottoman” due to his resemblance to that piece of furniture when he was in a prone position. During another house party he was found having a romantic relationship with an exotic stuffed kitty in Lisa’s bedroom.

He did his best to do the mousing in the house, although Lisa had a way of making that quite challenging for him. Mostly, he could be found sprawled out on the floor on his back in the middle of any given room, spread-eagle and utterly content, but ready with quick eyes to pounce on a piece of string or wiggling toe that happened by.

His strength was legendary. Rob likes to tell the story of a large whole chicken he left de-thawing in the kitchen sink one day. Upon returning from an errand, Rob found the bird lying on the floor, with its plastic wrapping torn and its meat ravaged. It remains a mystery to us all just how Jackson managed to pull his weight in chicken up out of the sink and off the counter!

He formed feline friendships with many other wonderful humans in Michigan , including other housemates Jennie Korona, Rebecca Chapman, and Ken Kozicki.

In 1998 Jackson accompanied Lisa and her brother Tim on a cross-country driving odyssey, and became a resident of Colorado in July of that year. He was Lisa’s constant companion and during this time he also befriended other humans, including housemates Paul Devine & Mikkel Hylden. After Lisa married John Hofmeister in 2002, this growing family added to its ranks a dog, then another dog, and then a child, and then another child. Being a cat and naturally the least needy of the lot, Jackson endured these “demotions” in status without complaint.

In his final years he had gone deaf, and as a result his voice grew quite loud – presumably because he was unable to hear himself speak. He preferred to spend most of his time in the basement where it was warm and cozy. Despite his decline, he still enjoyed performing his famous “flippy” move – a gentle somersault over Lisa’s outstretched foot.

He was in Lisa’s arms in his basement home when he peacefully ascended to the Heavyside Layer just a few days before Thanksgiving. He spent his last few days enjoying lavish attention and head scratches, tuna fish dinners, and all the catnip he could stand.

Goodbye, sweet boy. You will be dearly missed.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
We told Anne Peyton the news the next day, after Lisa could compose her Pisces-weepy self a little better. It was pretty much a non-event for a 3 1/2 year old, despite the fact that she had grown quite attached to the old boy recently. But the next day on the way to the airport (to grandmother's house we went for Thanksgiving), she composed a little song and sang it for us in the car. I can't nearly do it justice because it was sung in the sweetest, tiniest little voice, but it went like this:

alllllll cats die....when they get old
alllllll cats die....when they get old
alllllll cats die....when they get old
alllllll cats die....when they get old

Immediately thereafter she offered to sing another song for us. It began "allll elephants...". She quickly interrupted herself and assured us that although it SOUNDED like it would be the same song, it wasn't. She then proceeded with:

allll elephants like...to splash water on their backs
and so on

Variety Show

Today while Tombo was napping and John was at the Bronco game with Casey, Becky and I were treated to a special performance by the ultimate Mistress of Ceremonies, Anne Peyton Hofmeister. She set up a small theatre in the kitchen, using stepstools as audience seating, and she placed herself in a chair behind the "stage". Here is a sampling of the lineup:

- Several select readings from her collection, starting with "Brown Bear, Brown Bear". She "read" the entire book to us, and then took a moment to ask each of us, individually, to name the animals we saw on the pages. When we got it wrong, she very patiently & sweetly told us the correct answer. When we got it right, she was quick to praise us. Next she read from "So Many Bunnies"...

- An invisible dance troupe of "bootiful people" (oh dear; , is it starting already?) performed onstage for a few minutes. They received a standing ovation from us. Afterwards, she invited us each up to do some twirls and hops onstage, with her careful instruction.

- Delicious chocolate and vanilla candies were served at what had to have been an intermission. Ever the consummate host, she didn't bat an eyelash when we requested broccoli and beans instead, and served it right up

- At one point she requested that if we were to see a slug crawling on the stage, we should let her know immediately so she could take it outside. Eagle-eye Beck spotted one, and it was quickly ushered out as promised.

- During the show several animals sat quietly beside her: a sheep, a dog, a chicken, and a giraffe. In what seemed to be her grand finale, she asked each of us if we'd like to hold the animals. Of course we nodded enthusiastically, and she carefully handed each animal over to us, one at a time. Our time was limited and fully supervised. Becky & I both had problems handling the chicken - so flappy & squawky! When we asked for advice on handling him she very matter-of-factly and confidently explained that it was best to turn him over onto his stomach and push down on his back. It worked like a charm!

A Pee and Three Elk

John left for his deer hunting trip Thursday morning, and he missed out on two big events! First was that night, when Tombo was running around naked after his bath. He started peeing, and I exclaimed "Oh, Tommy, do you want to make your peepee go in the toilet?". "Uh-HUH", he nodded definitively, and followed me down the hall to the kiddie toilet (to my amazement, because typically the answer is "nooooooo". I helped him aim, and away he went! Sis was there to cheer him on. Then he stopped the flow, looked at me impishly, and exclaimed "Again!". The flow resumed, then stopped; the look, and "Again". Several times. It was a hoot. We gave him alot to be proud of but I'm not convinced this is the start of something big, just yet!

Then, Friday morning at breakfast I looked out the window and saw THREE ELK grazing in the open space behind our house! A bull and 2 cows. Fortunately they hung around long enough for me to fish out my zoom lens and snap some photos. We're not too far from the foothills so it's not that unusual to see them, but this was our first time in nearly 8 years of living here. Later that day they were bedded down by the creek between here & the lake. I called the DOW and learned that typically they make their way down & back via creek beds. I hope they do OK on the way back. They were majestic.

Pupup

The week of October 13th began normally enough. John left bright and early for his bi-monthly trip to Ft. Worth, and the kids and I set out for a morning adventure. But on the way out of the neighborhood we noticed a small dog wandering aimlessly in the middle of the street. Forever grateful to the numerous people who have stopped for OUR dogs wandering aimlessly over the years, I stopped to check for a collar/tags. Nothing. But amazingly, he came to me, with these huge, frightened eyes. He seemed downright grateful. We went back home to make up "found dog" signs, and proceeded to hang them at various posts around the neighborhood. He passed my trust test, so he was allowed to ride around on Anne Peyton's lap, much to her great delight. Once the signs were up, he ran some errands with us and then came back for lunch. Anne Peyton named him "Yoyo", then later she changed his name to "Pupup" for some reason. Since I liked the first name better I attempted to call him that, but she firmly and quickly corrected me.

I figured I'd have a message on my phone any minute, or at least that night after the owner came home from work. But nothing. So he spent the night with us. I requested to work from home the next day so I could keep an eye on him.

Day 2 - I left my info with every shelter & vet office I could think of. The vet said he had no microchip and was probably a MinPin/Chihuahua mix. By the end of that day I still had no calls, and I got pretty worked up about the thought that some awful person must have knowingly abandoned him. There would have been no excuse for them not to find me (imho). It's easy to let emotions pile on top of emotions, but suffice it to say I was a weepy mess as I was going to bed that night.

Day 3 - Had to get up to the office so Dolores reluctantly took the dog for the day so he wouldn't be alone in my house. She called me at 2pm practically in tears, begging me to come home as soon as possible, because he had crapped on her carpet and would not come out from behind the couch. Poor Dolores. Poor Pupup.

Day 4 - Poor John returned home to find he was no longer the dominant male in the house. He was greeted by the newcomer with a fierce growl and then fiercer barking when he got closer. The growling never let up. I loved that the little sweetie was just defending me, but you can imagine how annoying it was - especially to John. The best was when John started growling back at him. Boy THAT went over well!

Day 5 - Gave up on finding an owner, so I posted Pupup with my Freecycle group. (Never heard of Freecycle? Oh my goodness! You must check out http://www.freecycle.org). Within an hour I had 6 responses - several with great recommendations about no-kill shelters, plus some tentative offers of adoption! I zeroed in on one woman, Michelle, who said she already had a chihuahua mix, and was looking for a companion dog. That was a plus, since she was already familiar with their overly protective nature. I asked her a few questions by phone and decided it would be a great match; she didn't even mind that he wasn't fully potty-trained. The kids and I dropped him off at their house later that night, and I was convinced without a doubt. He even crapped on her floor while we were there and she cleaned it up without so much as a grimace. And she offered that we could come back at any time to visit. I'm not sure if that was more for Anne Peyton's sake, or MINE when she saw my tears on our way out!! Sheesh, what a crybaby.

Day 6 - Had an email from Michelle stating that the first night went fine, and that "Chico" (surprisingly (not), they opted NOT to call him "Pupup") acted like he had lived with them a long time, and that he and Tinkerbell were getting along famously. All's well that ends well.

Tommy News

Just a quick note about Tommy. He had his 2 year appointment last week. He's off the charts as far as his height goes, and the doc warned us about people expecting too much from him since he looks older than he is. Or as someone else put it, the trouble is that people think your kid is an idiot.

In any case, one of the things John and I chuckled over today is his sheer enthusiasm. He will literally yell these single words out -- not out of anger or TRYING to be loud per se...it just seems that he is way excited about them! "WA-GA" when he sees a big body of water. Or "CHOO TRAIN". Or "SISSY!" or "DADDY"!. Or when he's wondering where one of those things are, he just changes the intonation. "DADDY?" - with this incredibly inquisitive look, and palms up in the air. He's definitely got his oral punctuation marks down pat.

He's also a cuddly little monster. Loves his soft blankets and if you offer him one of those (with a book as icing on the cake), he'll pretty much cuddle up with you, no questions asked.

Pine Beetles love peanut butter

A great day today: we made the trip up to Avon, CO to spend the day with Terie & Casey Holmquist. It took the kids a little while to warm up, but once they did, I feel pretty sure they would agree with John and I that it was worth the long drive for a relatively short trip (even with the nasty traffic jam on Vail Pass on the way back!).

We discussed pine beetles (which are devastating the population of pine trees in much of Colorado, leaving them dead and brown - very sad) on the way up. Anne Peyton immediately jumped on the bandwagon of cursing the beetles: "MEAN pine beetles", "that's not very nice", etc. I think she knows me too well, though, because then she gave me a very difficult question to answer: "Mommy, would you smoosh a pine beetle if you met one?". I answered "it depends". "Yes or no, mommy", she said. Damn! We made up a story about Thumpkin offering an alternative of PB&Js to the pine beetles one day, thus saving the entire forest.

On the way back down, AP was relentless in her quest for more stories. John and I both told a few, and she wanted more!more!more!. Cute at first, but after awhile it was just too much. I thought I said quietly to John, "Oh-my-God" (in that incredulous, drawn-out kind of a way). AP immediately said "mommy, did you say Oh My God?". And before I could answer, Tommy starts into a chirpy chant of "ohmygod, ohmygod, ohmygod, ohmygod". Fortunately it turned into "ohmygosh". John and I could only laugh deliriously.
Anne Peyton can be painfully shy given the right conditions, and it gets worse when the focus of a group of unfamiliar people turns to her. This has been difficult for me, given my own introversion and social anxieties. So last Monday (9/29), when she & Tommy & I took a trip to the Golden library for story/song time, I felt pretty sure that she would refuse to go by herself to hear the stories up close, and instead cling safely to me. I was exceedingly surprised and proud when, after she realized that I would stay back in the circle and not go with her up front, she thought about it for a minute then took Tommy's hand and sweetly said "Tommy, do you want to come with me to hear the story?"

It was yet another lesson learned for me: that kids will do their own things, when they're ready. I loved that it was her very own idea, and not the result of coercion or nagging from me.

After hanging out at the library and having lunch along nearby Clear Creek, we headed over to the Colorado Railroad Museum - our first visit. It was a really neat place! Especially cool was the fact that it was virtually empty, a stark contrast to the weekend prior when Thomas the Tank Engine was there for his annual visit - a veritable zoo. I was hoping perhaps Thomas hadn't left yet for his next venue, and sure enough, that was the case. We found him sitting by himself in the roundhouse. I realized later that we shouldn't have been in there; it was probably quite a liability. On the way out I noticed a small area behind plexiglass where museum visitors should have been relegated to. But instead, for a few minutes with noone there to correct us, we had Thomas to ourselves. I'm pretty sure I was more excited about it than the kids were though!

Bye-bye pacis, it's been nice. Hope you find your paradise!

Lots to catch up on - but one piece of big news is that Anne Peyton finally gave up her nighttime/naptime pacifier! Shortly after we returned from Peru (more on that later!), John realized that she hadn't mentioned her paci lately, so he suggested she sleep without it that night. Amazingly, she agreed to it (we had suggested it many times before), and he agreed to sleep in her bed to help get her through the first night. Each night thereafter she slept without it, although sometimes it was difficult and she heartbreakingly requested it. Then, about a week later, we suggested that we give all the pacis to the mail lady so she could deliver them to all the poor babies without pacis. This had also been suggested and discussed MANY times before (even with the mail lady), but this time she agreed. We were a little nervous about showing her the box of pacis, but she didn't turn into a paci monster. Instead she bravely carried the box out to the mail truck and handed it over. It really was a BIG moment because you can't imagine how much comfort she derived from those things; they were her ROCK whenever she was upset about anything. So the courage and independence this showed was major. We celebrated immediately and called a few people to let her brag about her bravery. A week later or so she rec'd a letter in the mail from a little girl in California who had received the pacis and was so very grateful!! (thanks, Nonney!).

Overheard

From Lisa's scribbled notes of things she's overheard these past few months:

From Anne Peyton:
- in a complaining voice: "Mommy! Midas is wicking the wotion off my weg!"

- "I'm the boss of my peepee and my poopoo"

- "Mommy, Tommy is tying (crying)". Or, "I want to sweep in my tib (crib) tonight" (I will be so sad when she can actually pronounce the letters C, Q, K, L, etc. I suppose we could have her practice it more often, but....no!)

- with great enthusiasm: "Mommy! I'm so happy! Because Midas' weg feels betta and Tommy said 'Momma'! Yea! mmmm hmmmmmm!"

- "I just a yittle bit scared"

- "My head is yittle. But it will get bigger and bigger, just wike yours!"

- Speaking of little, when she needs to describe something as being "just a yittle bit ______ (scared, shy, etc), she uses her index finger to point at her eye, from the side. Presumably this came from us using our thumb and index fingers, somewhere in the vicinity of our faces, to illustrate "little", and this translated into pointing at her eye.

- "Mommy, when I'm angey at you, I don't wike you, but when I'm angey at you, I still wuv you"

- "Mommy, I wike (Nonney/Grandma/Aunt Becky/etc) so much"

- favorite made-up word: ko ko po

- favorite songs: From Boynton's Rhinoceros Tap CD: Barnyard Dance, Tickle Time, "Wittle Won", the amorous turkey song (she thinks that one is "pwetty funny"), "Hoo-Wa" from Laurie Berkner Band, Unicorn Song (but she was so sad about the ending that she made up a new one), Bear Hunt song, Wheels on the Bus is still a favorite...

- Just last night, we were all 4 sitting on the deck enjoying the beautiful evening. We agreed we'd just sit and talk. I said "Anne P, what do you want to talk about?". She immediately said "I don't want to talk about pacies (pacifiers). I want to talk about cats". It cracked us up how seriously she said all this. Later she elaborated that she wanted to talk about the way cats drink water (which she imitated for us).

Tommy:
- "Hi - ya!" (his greeting, said as if he's about to do a karate kick, but the accent is on the first syllable)

- "Hi tor-tul" (Becky taught him to say this to a small wooden turtle at her house)

- Favorite word: "No" -- he literally says it whenever you ask him a question, including when the answer is really "yes", such as "do you want a cookie?". We're not sure if he just doesn't understand yes vs no, or just loves to sound difficult

- "Seesee" (Sissy, what he calls Anne Peyton; said in a high-pitched, accent-on-the-first-syllable, delighted-to-see her tone.... usually).

- "choo choo" (said in the same sing-songy voice)

- He always has been, and still is, a boy who loves his comfort objects. For Anne Peyton it was (uh, yea, still IS, at bedtime....) her pacifier, but for him, it's either one of a number of soft fleecy blankets, or a small stuffed animal. It's tangible how much he will calm down once he has possession of one of these - especially the blanket when you lay it on your shoulder).

- When he's really ticked at you (and he still does have quite a little temper), he walks away and rebukes any attempt you might make to comfort him

- Loves to dance. I'll constantly catch him clapping and bee-bopping to music on the radio or CD player in the car, even if it's not exactly rhthym-inducing music. Likes all the same songs AP does.

- Definitely has his favorite books. Unlike AP who would listen to just about anything you read her, he likes to pick out his books and if he doesn't like one you're reading him, he'll hop out of your lap and get a new one. Favorites by far are The Hungry Little Caterpillar and Good Night Gorilla with a host of runners-up including Animal Kisses, any train books

- and the thing that makes me LOL every time I think of it: when you ask him what a lion says, he immediately responds heartily: ROAR, and this is always accompanied by him clenching one or both of his fists at the same time.

John is in Mexico City right now, project-managing some network upgrades to the United Airlines facilities at the airport there. Hopefully he's able to squeeze in some sightseeing time and a chance to practice his Spanish!

High time we reviewed some of the highlights of the past month or two!

Ice Skating Lessons - John and AP have been taking ice skating lessons at the University of Denver every Monday evening for the past 6 weeks or so. The first 3 lessons were pretty pathetic...AP hardly able to stand at all on the ice, and John's back all the worse for the wear. 4th time though, we tightened her skates alot more and it seemed to make all the difference! She actually had a ball out there, joking around with daddy and instructor Kate. She saw her cousin Sarah ice skate at Thanksgivingtime in WI, so we think that's a big part of her surprisingly strong motivation.

Lisa started back to school - this time only one class: Family Therapy Theory. Really fascinating stuff, to learn theories about family dynamics. Even if she never becomes a counselor, there is some practical application potential here!

She also began volunteering with a nonprofit called Families First. It's been around for about 30 years I think and its mission is to strengthen families and prevent child abuse. So every 2 weeks she has a 4 hour shift, which she can take from home, to answer the Support Line. You never know what you're going to get on this line, but it's not a crisis line per se. Mostly parents seeking support, which of course everyone needs but not everyone has enough of, to cope with child-rearing. It's a great way to do some volunteering, with not too much time commitment, for something that seems important. And as a bonus she's getting some much-needed practical "counseling" experience.

1/30-2/12 - Papa's visit - Lisa's dad and Jill stayed a night with us then headed up to Nils' wonderful home in Arrowhead/Beaver Creek. We joined them a few days later, along with Jill's son Rich, his wife Pam, and their daughter Maddy from Pennsylvania. The Denver Neyman clan (Tim, Sarita, Olivia) came too! Snow is plentiful so there was some good skiing/boarding to be had. Lisa went out for the first time since her ACL surgery in '00, thanks to some long over-due PT, patient instruction from now-resident Casey, and some laid-back skiing companions (Jill, Pam & Maddy). John and Lisa skiied for the first time togther the next day, while the kids were napping, which was great. Saturday night the Rardin side of the group took a cold but beautiful horse-drawn sleigh ride west of Edwards, CO. The horses were beautiful Percherons and their names were Kibbles & Bits. Booooooo. On Sunday the Neymans sadly had to head home but we were joined by Casey & Terie who helped us cheer the NY Giants on to victory in the Super Bowl! About 5 people piled into Nils' bed to watch Shrek - too cute!

1/17-1/28 - Nonny's visit - Lisa's mom became a fixture in our household and the kids just loved having her for that long. Highlights included some very special grandmother/granddaughter time (art projects, feeding birds and squirrels, making cozy tents), a National Western Stock Show visit, Chinese buffet dinner with the Duncanson clan, a mother/daughter shopping trip & makeover for Lisa, and a grandmother/mother/daughter trip downtown via light rail to see the Tiny Tots DSO concert at Boettcher Hall!

1/15-1/21 - John tacked a weekend on to his business trip to Chicago and got to spend a day/night in Janesville with his parents. Then on Saturday he, Casey & Fuzzy road-tripped up to Green Bay for the NFC Championships. Only Ace had tix to the game, so he froze his buns off while the other 2 stayed warm inside a Green Bay bar with cold beers. It was a devastating loss for the Pack, but the boys had a great time anyway.

Poopy Thursday

Thursday, February 7, 2008 - Poopy* Thursday (comes after Fat Tuesday & Ash Wednesday)

Thanks PT (Pastor Tim) for that! We are sooo pleased to report that Miss AP, after months of intentionally changing from panties to diapers just before a #2 came on, decided to "drop the kids off at the pool!". John was home alone with the kids this night while Lisa was in class. She was just packing up her books at dismissal time when she got a text message on her cell phone. Wonder of wonders, it's a delightful photo of the toilet full of its welcome new addition! A classic way for John to spread the good news. And it's been good ever since...lots and lots of staying dry...and no poopies in the panties since then. HOORAY!

After consulting all sorts of books & experienced parents, we had offered stickers, popsicles, and the chance to watch a video she had picked out all by herself at the store. Nothing was apparently enticing enough. Finally we let her watch the video anyway, because it just so happened that she had picked out an Elmo Potty Training video. We think that did the trick, because the next night it happened.

Happy Holidays to everyone! We have SO enjoyed receiving cards, pictures and letters to catch us up on everyone's lives. Thank you.

Today is New Year's Eve and we are finishing up a marathon 10-days-of-togetherness. We decided to stay put this Christmas and had no guests, so we did our best to fill the days with fun activities. Not that we were always successful! I hate to admit it but the word "bored" crossed my lips a few times. It didn't help that poor Anne Peyton woke up from her Christmas Eve nap with a 102 degree fever. So we missed going to Christmas Eve church service, a party at the Hauhuths, and our trip up to Avon to spend Christmas day with Teri & Casey. Fortunately she had bouts of feverlessness and was well enough to open gifts and revel in the day with us

The best was that it was a WHITE CHRISTMAS! We woke up to the white stuff coming down Christmas morning, and it didn't stop for awhile. Simply beautiful, and the perfect day to stay put.

We kicked off the holiday season right this year. For Thanksgiving we were in Janesville for our 'Norman Rockwell" Thanksgiving with John's family. We had a grand time. Friday was the kids' traditional visit to Santa Claus at the mall. Anne Peyton's initial hesitance was quickly overpowered by 6-year-old cousin Sarah's enthusiasm. Will post the picture once we can get it scanned in.

John and I even got a night off on Saturday, leaving the kids with Grandma & Grandpa and heading over to Madison for the night with Fuzzy & Monica!

On the way home Tuesday, we had our worst plane travel ever with the kids. Well, with Tommy. Whew! He was a handful. Was either crying or screaming or chirping loudly with happiness and waking up passengers. Or hitting us in the face and laughing hysterically when we put our "mean" faces on and scolded him. Of course we told ourselves we would not be flying with him again for 2 more years or so. AP was an angel, contentedly watching Elmo on daddy's laptop. But, that initial conviction is fading already. We have to see everybody, after all!

Wednesday, November 28 - Becky treated us to "member's night" at the Denver Botanic Gardens holiday light display. It was bitter cold but the kids were bundled up pretty well. What was delightful was Anne Peyton's enthusiasm for it all. She was literally bursting at the seams with excitement about each and every Christmas light. When Sue & Claud loaned their 3-D glasses (which made each light look like a snowman or a snowflake) to her, the smile plastered on her face underneath those silly glasses was just irresistable. Typically she does not like to listen to songs she has never heard before, but in listening to Christmas carols in the car, she took a shining to several of them the first time: Little Drummer Boy, Frosty The Snowman, We Wish You A Merry Christmas, Jingle Bells. After each she'd say "Mommy, I want to hear that song again!", or "I wike dat song!". On the way home she politely asked "Daddy, may I have some more Rum Pum Pum Pum, pease?". At one point I suggested to John and Becky about making figgy pudding this Christmas, and AP chimed right in with her great idea:"MOMMY! We can make some pudding for da snowman and da reindeer!!!" (she was referring to the people dressed up as Rudolph & Frosty at the Botanic Gardens. As she puts it, she was "a wittle bit scared" of Rudolph.)

Sorry to gush, but it was really joyful to hear her excitement, and quite contagious. It is restoring some of that childhood magic of Christmas for all of us.

Woke up to snow on the ground this morning. Little Anne Peyton peered out the window thoughtfully, then said excitedly "Mommy! I want to throw snow on Daddy and Tommy!".

Undoubtedly she was remembering the fun of our last snowfall, which occurred on a Sunday. Today was a work day, and a daycare day, so methinks the meltdown that ensued was because the morning wasn't quite living up to her "family fun in the snow" expectation.

At breakfast, when served his banana, Tommy said "nanananana".

The Hofmeisters at Mom Rardin's house - 10/07

The Highlights

Nov 9-12 - John was a noble father and husband, allowing his grateful wife to fly up to Seattle with Becky to visit Maricris for the weekend. Us girls had a great time. Saturday MC treated us, with her bonus/perk $ from employer Expedia, to a 9-course meal (with perfectly-matched wine pairings) at the famous 5 diamond restaurant, The Herbfarm, in Woodinville, WA (Washington's wine country). It was an amazing experience of "slow food" and we had a blast. Afterwards we walked across the way and settled into our luxurious lodge room at The Willows.

Nov 2-4 - John's dad, Dave was in town to meet his grandson and visit the rest of us. Saturday night, Anne Peyton and I had "girl's night" tickets to see the Jefferson County Westernaires (kind of like 4-H but they provide kids with horses to ride & take care of) horse show at the Stock Show complex. Undaunted by her failure to nap that day, off we went. We settled in the front row with our hot dogs just as the first horse came out. Here's how our conversation went:

Anne Peyton: I want to ride horsie!
Mommy: No, honey, this is a horse SHOW; we're going to have a good time and WATCH the horsies!
Anne Peyton: I want to ride horsie!
Mommy: yadda, yadda
Anne Peyton (escalating): I want to ride horsie!
Mommy: yadda, yadda
Anne Peyton (crying): I want to ride horsie!
Anne Peyton (screaming): I want to ride horsie!

We spent about 15 minutes walking around the upper edge of the coliseum, trying to calm her down and convince her that she'd have to pipe down or we were going home. To no avail. She screamed the entire way back to the car, and the entire 30 minutes home. It was a chorus of "I want to ride horsie" over and over and over and over. Alas.

Oct 31 - we were pretty psyched for Anne Peyton's first "memorable" Halloween; however, just before 5pm we got a call that she had puked at day care. Definite stomach flu going around, so needless to say we skipped trick-or-treating that night. Fortunately it was less than 24 hour thing, and Tommy stayed clear of it (nothing worse than an infant who can't tell you when he's about to puke his guts out!).

Oct 26-29 - Lisa had class (Human Development; interesting stuff) all Friday night and Saturday day. Saturday evening we enjoyed the Itzkowitz family's 2nd annual Halloween bash in Wash Park. Sunday we went for a hike at Three Sisters Park (where AP had her first pee in the woods). Monday John had tix to the Denver v. Green Bay Monday Night Football game with Casey, Fuzzy (who flew in from Chicago), and Jimmy Reitano & Bobby Richardson (who flew in from Virg Beach). It was an AMAZING game - final score 19-13, with the Packers winning in OT!

Oct 19-21 - We were treated by a visit from the Neyman Family - Gary, Nancy, Tim, Sarita and Olivia on Saturday night. John had returned the day before from his successful elk hunting trip to Craig, CO, so of course we had elk burgers. We're so happy to have a 2nd generation of Neyman visits in our life! Then on Sunday, our first big snowfall! We had a blast playing out in the snow with the kids. Anne Peyton didn't whine about it being cold and LOVED her 2 snowmen, and Tommy was a real trooper with his first snowy playtime. We had the "secret Santa" sled out in the back, too.

Oct 10-15 - Flew to Greensboro, GA for a wonderful visit with Nonney and Gammy plus a bonus with Aunt Ellen Stoup in town for a few days. Friday we drove 2 hours north to Columbia, SC - site of cousin Jed Rardin's wedding to bride Erin Spelman. It was a great excuse for a family reunion which included Lisa's mom, dad, brother Tim & his wife Amy, and many of the Rardin & Horr aunties, uncles, and some cousins too! The wedding was something else. With Jed as the organist and choirmaster for Trinity Episcopal Church in downtown Columbia, he had the entire choir there to celebrate with their voices, not to mention a who's who list of organists from prominent churches in the US and UK. At the reception, Anne Peyton learned to trip the light fantastic with her Uncle Tim and Aunt Amy. A first!
Oct 14 - Dropped Sydney off at her new home. Long story...but we made a very difficult and emotional decision that all of us, including both dogs, would be better off if Sydney lived with another family with dogs. She now lives with Garry Cook, his dog Sasquatch, and cat Sulley in Roxborough Park, and is doing very well. We stay in touch via email (Sydney's a great typist), and hope to have a date at the dog park one day soon.

Oct 6 - Cider Days in Lakewood. Perhaps it will become an annual thing; first time was last year when Tommy was just a week old, and stayed home crying with his Nonney.

Sept 28-31 - Grandma Lucy flew in to help us celebrate Tombo's first birthday on the 30th! His party was Sunday morning, and was attended by Aunt Becky, the Angelinos, the Itzkowitzes, the Giolo-Miles, and the Hauhuths. The kids enjoyed the cardboard shantytown we set up in the back 40, and we all enjoyed the gorgeous weather. Can't believe it has been a year since this little man joined us.
Other stuff:
-Tommy is beginning to walk...5,10, 12 steps at a time!
- He loves to point at things and say "da", looking back at you, ever so seriously
-AP is pseudo potty trained...she gets a jelly bean* every time she goes #1 in the toilet & alot of the time she's great about it and stays quite dry. But it's still a roller coaster
*John nicknamed her "jelly bean", to which her response is, "Daddy, I not a jelly bean, I Anne Peyton!"

Q: Anne Peyton, what's your last name?
A: Hah-my-tuh (accent on the first syllable)

Q: What is ...Elaine's last name?
A: Hah-my-tuh

Q: What is...Anthony's last name?
A: Hah-my-tuh

-I sorry, mommy.
-It's otay (said with conviction)
-I dohn WANna go do Meywyn's house. (translation: I don't want to go to Marilyn's house. Marilyn is our "new" day care provider. AP utters this statement practically each morning, but invariably she has a great time there).

- When asked why any given animal or person might happen to look sad: 'cuz....cuz....he wants his mommy"

August/September 2007 Highlights

September 20 - We're getting a new kitchen! After years of generally talking about it, and months of pretending to do something about it, we finally are! It's a low-budget remodel consisting of granite countertops, replacing the ugly fluorescent light/beast on the ceiling with can lighting, knocking out the wall between the kitchen and DR and creating a bartop there, and putting in an over-the-range microwave (freeing up space elsewhere). So exciting! If goes as planned, all should be complete by the time we celebrate Tombo's first birthday here on the 30th.

Highlights:

August 18-20 - Weekend in Arrowhead/Beaver Creek with birthday boy Tim Neyman, Sarita, and their 2-month-old, Olivia. A great weekend, capped off by a bonus visit from Terie & Casey the last night. Monday night 8/20, Lisa started classes again after slacking off all summer. "Career Counseling" Mondays from 4-7pm. Dull professor, but surprisingly interesting class so far!

August 24-26 - Dave & Nadia Roberts from Chicago, and their 5-month-old little man, Gabriel came to visit. It was wonderful to catch up with them and meet their little darling (truly, he is the angel Gabriel). All of us except Gabriel enjoyed the Georgetown Loop Railroad on Saturday (poor guy hated the teeth-rattling train whistle) and then pizza at the old standby, Beaujos in Idaho Springs.

September 1-3 - The kids had a few hours with the Bravo Family while John and I attended Rick & Lata's Indian-American wedding. It was lovely, and the highlight was the bride & groom and a dozen of their friends and family performing the "Bollywood" dance they had been practicing for months! Then, we rushed home to change clothes, and hopped in the car to head down to "Family Camp" at Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp, west of Canon City in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Our old Abiding Hope crew was there and we had a lovely weekend, complete with campfire songs, s'mores, a hoe-down, and more. Could become a Labor Day tradition for us! On the way home on Labor Day, we stopped in at the Colorado State Fair in Pueblo for a few hours. A highlight, at least for us parents, was watching our daughter wait in a long line and then march up on stage to sit on a stool and milk a cow! She did not want our help, and she was oh-so-serious about it. Kind of surreal, for some reason!

September 7-9 - John turned 37 on the 8th, but we had a mini celebration for him here on the 6th prior to his departure to Vegas! Nothing like spending your birthday with some great friends (Mark Thoni and Olin Burrow in this case), tailgating and sitting in the stands to watch your alma mater play UNLV! He had a great time and even paid for some of his trip with his winnings!

September 15-16 - Weekend at home...birthday parties for the Camargo kids, and neighbor Elaine May. Hired our kitchen contractor and did some good work around the house, thanks to some gardening consulting by Beck!

Anne Peyton is a regular school girl now! Our new daycare's preschool program started a few weeks ago, and it's really cool. She comes home now with all sorts of papers and stories. Last week they made stick horses, and she finally got to bring the finished product home. I was out back, and asked AP to show me her horse. Shortly, she emerged from around the side of the house at a full gallop. It occured to me that she learned to gallop in preschool! She still has a really tough time saying goodbye to us in the mornings, continues to utter "I don't WANT to go to Marilyn's house"...but invariably at the end of the day she is full of smiles & wiggles & pride. We're very pleased with the choice, but we all miss the Bravos too. Definitely AP isn't the center of attention like she was, since age 4 months, with Kathy & her doting children. That would be hard for anyone to get used to!

Tombo isn't walking yet although Becky claims she saw him take his first step the other weekend! He's such an adorable crawler, with those long arms splaying out to either side; we'll miss it when he's done. Just tonight we realized we hadn't heard him scream in awhile. THAT we won't miss. He definitely is a hothead; doesn't take much for his cherubic face to turn all red and ticked-looking, accompanied by the loudest baby voice you ever heard. His favorite thing lately is clapping; he LOVES it especially when you join him.
